THE REPAIR JOURNAL
We see it all the time: a cracked wicker strand smothered in cyanoacrylate (Super Glue). It looks messy, and worse, it fails within a week.
Plastic Doesn’t Bond Well
Polyethylene (PE) wicker is a low-surface-energy plastic. Most glues cannot grab onto it. They dry brittle, and as soon as you sit in the chair, the flex causes the glue bond to snap.
The Weave is Structural
Wicker furniture relies on tension. A glued end has no tension. The only way to restore strength is to weave a new strand back into the frame, locking it under the perpendicular strands.
The Bottom Line
Put down the glue bottle. The only permanent fix is mechanical, not chemical.
